This week in 3/4A we began investigating 3D shapes.
The students loved making shapes using toothpicks and blu tack, starting with common shapes such as cubes and rectangular prisms and then expanding their builds to include more obscure prisms and pyramids. We have continued our morphology focus from English into Maths by noting the Latin prefixes which indicate the number of sides in 2D shapes, such as hex- meaning 6 sides. This made unfamiliar names such as "hexagonal prism" like a puzzle to decode, where students quickly began making connections to construct their models.
There was just as much enthusiasm when it came to drawing 3D shapes on paper, including isometric dot paper which proved to be a challenge that students were passionate about mastering!
After building our models, students discussed features such as faces, vertices, and edges. This knowledge was helpful when playing games like "Headbands" and "Kahoot!"
Now that we feel more confident with our shapes knowledge, over the coming week, teams of students will design and construct geometric cities. Watch this space!
Dear Parents
A huge and heartfelt thank you to all of you for the support you gave in preparation for, and during, our fete on Sunday. The purpose of our fete was twofold, the most important being that we wanted to use this opportunity to bring our community back together and to remind ourselves of the amazing community we have at St Mary’s. Sunday’s fete did exactly that! The gathering of our community, the way everyone worked together and the excitement for the children was quite overwhelming. The other purpose of the fete was to raise money for our school to enable us to purchase new decodable books and new computers for the children. We raised a profit of $12,000.00 which is an incredible success, particularly when the weather was so challenging. I thank you all for making this day such a great success. It was a joy to see all of the families coming together and the children having so much fun.
As we prepare for the end of the year, we are very busy creating the classes for the year ahead. This is a challenge to ensure we create classes that support the learning for your child as well as taking into account preferences, needs and special considerations. I know you will understand that we do all we can to ensure your child has the best opportunity to learn, to surround themselves with those who best support their learning and to have someone in their class that they enjoy being with. I thank you for supporting this process and assure you that much time and dedication has gone into creating all of the classes for next year. Your child will find out their class in time for the State-wide Transition Day on December 13.
A reminder that the season of Advent starts this coming weekend. Advent is a time of waiting and preparing for the birth of Jesus and we take this opportunity to share in the importance of Jesus’ birth as we celebrate the coming of Christmas. We also share with the children in our school the importance of preparing for this special time by reflecting on the joy of giving to others, bringing the best of ourselves to the lives of those around us, and in sharing this exciting time with those we love. I pray that this season of Advent brings joy and peace to your family and to your home.
Kindest regards
Lisa
