Students in 5/6D have been using the picture story book ‘Common Wealth’ by Greigg Dreis to develop their critical reading and thinking skills. They have been exploring the text’s genre – Slam Poetry, which is chosen by authors who are passionate/have very strong feelings/opinions about an issue and are using this vehicle to develop awareness and a call for action. Students have been practising reading the poem. identifying the author’s purpose and inferring the central themes inherent in the book. Topical issues which are very relevant have been raised and the students have been asking lots of questions and making insightful observations.
Here are some of the children’s thoughts:
I think that someone who writes Slam Poetry argues and protests so that those who are in power/with the ability in their job, can listen to their arguments and will make changes. They want politicians to go to an election. People who want change write this type of poetry. By Jasper. W
I think people write slam poetry because they want to make a change and a difference to something that is impacting their lives. For example, how our First Nation’s people have been treated and land rights. Slam poets can also talk about racism and disrespect they see in society today. It is an effective way for people to protest. By Kaitlyn L
The themes in this book are racism, equality and fairness because it was talking about how things should be changed and how unfair it was for the aboriginals.

This poem makes me feel like others and I should be reflecting on how we treat the environment and how we should be taking care of nature and our planet. We should be taking care of this environment because after it has been destroyed the loss is irretrievable . People take nature and the environment for granted. We should not be taking nature for granted because nature helps us survive and live healthy lives. The environment produces resources such as paper, food and fibres to help us live. I think if we do not take care of our environment we should give it back to the aborigines. They will take care of it because it has been their pride and joy for thousands of years. By Darby
I think slam poetry’s purpose is to protest about what the writer believes in. The people who write slam poems usually have a reason to write, like issues with the world, for example racial equality. Harvey G
Dear Parents and Carers
Life is very busy at school, with many fun and exciting activities happening. Last week we had a wonderful Book Week dress up day and we thank our families for the time and creativity you put into the children’s costumes. The parade was a lovely celebration for our school community and the activities throughout the day were a great success.
We are so proud of our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students as they prepare to represent our school at the Eisteddfod next week. They have worked so hard on their presentation preparation and I thank our staff for the support they have given to ensure each student feels confident and ready. For some of our students, this is an exciting time as they enjoy the opportunity to perform. For other students, this is such a challenge that they have chosen to take on. Despite how the students feel about performing, all children have dedicated their time and put in a lot of effort to ensure they are able to do their best on the day. We wish them all the very best and are so proud of them for participating.
Today we have our Father’s Day stall and the children are bursting with excitement to see what wonderful gifts they can buy for their Dads. A reminder that we have our Father’s Day celebration on Monday morning, starting at 8.00am with a coffee provided by Sant’ Andrea Espresso Cart and a muffin/cake. Coffees will be free to each Dad and a hot chocolate is provided for each child. Dad’s/Grandparents are invited to have a play on the playground or have a visit to their child’s classrooms, with our Prayer Gathering in the church at 8.45am. The children have made beautiful gifts for their Dads and are so excited to be presenting them to their Dads during the Prayer Gathering. We look forward to celebrating this special occasion with our Dads/Grandfathers and the special person in the life of their children. We wish all of our Dads and Grandfathers a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday.
We congratulate and are very proud of our girl’s basketball team for making the Division Basketball Tournament. They represented our school so well both on and off the court.
We are currently in the process of creating our class structures for next year. This involves a great deal of time and dedication, with many factors being taken into consideration by the staff. We do all we can to ensure we provide an environment where your child is able to learn and reach their potential. At present we are working on teacher allocations to classes and will begin allocating students to classes over the coming weeks. If you feel that there are any considerations we need to take into account for your child for next year, based on supporting their social and emotional needs, please email me at principal@stmnewbor.catholic.edu.au by the last day of this term, September 15. Emails regarding these considerations sent after this date will unfortunately not be included in the class structuring process.
Kind regards
Lisa
Book Week was celebrated last week at St Mary's with a dress up day. The theme of Book Week this year was 'Read, Grow, Inspire' and with that in mind the staff came dressed up as gardeners.
The day started with a parade outside with each grade taking a turn showing off their very clever and well thought out costumes. The children then split into groups and rotated through different classrooms for a morning of sharing a good book together.
On Monday we are having a special morning to celebrate Father’s Day.
We begin at 8.00am with a free coffee from Sant' Andrea Expresso Cart with a muffin/cake. At 8.45am we will have our Prayer Gathering in the church. The morning should be finished by 9.30am.
A big thank you to our Craft Ladies for the tremendous amount of work they did getting ready for the Father's Day Stall and Raffle. We are truly blessed to have them as part of our school community.

In Term 4, we will be holding our annual school concert. As a special promotion for this exciting event, the Grade 6 children will design a logo for our concert and it will be turned into a screen print for t-shirts. The children are able to wear these t-shirts on Sports day next term and in the week leading up to the concert.
The cost for the printing is $8.00 per t-shirt. Students will need to supply their own plain black t-shirt, NO pockets or cropped t-shirts. T-shirts must be brand new OR freshly washed and clearly labelled.
We would love everyone to get involved in this!
Payment for t-shirts is through CDFpay:
https://stmnewbor.cdfpay.org.au/MonitorOnline/app/#!/login
Please submit payment and then send your t-shirt(s) CLEARLY labelled with your child’s name to school by Wednesday the 6th of September.
The very last date for orders will be Friday 8th September. (They need to be at the printers by this date in order to get them back for Term 4.)
Please see your classroom teacher if you have any questions.
Kind regards,
Elise Meggetto, Catherine Griffiths
