Week One has sadly brought our attention to natural disasters in our community, a timely coincidence with our new geography unit, ‘Fires and Floods’. In our first fortnight of this investigation, students have explored regions prone to bushfires and the importance of creating a bushfire action plan.
To reflect their understandings, they have constructed paragraphs utilising the structure of a hook, topic sentence, explanation and concluding sentence. It has also provided the opportunity to showcase our developing sentence structures using ‘if’, ‘even though’ and ‘although’ as examples. Then, to polish off our bright ideas, students have been keen to employ our focus vocabulary words. Please read messages from just some of our passionate writers in 3/4A! We pray that everyone will be prepared for this bushfire season.
Dear Parents and Carers
Today we celebrated our faith in action through the wonderful, energetic, exciting work of Andrew Chinn. Andrew worked with all classes throughout the day to create a fantastic celebration of our faith in the form of an afternoon concert. We were so proud of each of our children and the way they engaged with all of the songs, actions and instructions. We loved that so many parents and grandparents – and even great grandparents – came to share this special afternoon with our students. It has been a fantastic day and we thank Andrew for bringing such joy and fun to our school.
We are very busy with our production preparations! The children are working hard to learn their songs, actions and, for the senior students, their lines and roles. We are so excited that we can have our big production this year and we look forward to sharing another special occasion with our families. Please remember that for some of our students, performing on a stage in front of an audience is exciting and they thrive in this environment. For other children, this is daunting and challenging. We are so proud of all of our students as they prepare for our production, safe in the knowledge that their best is always enough.
As we prepare for the end of yet another busy year, we are also getting our students ready for transitioning to the next year of their school lives. For our Year 6 students, this can be an anxious and uncertain time where they become aware that they are leaving the security and familiarity of their primary school life and stepping into the relative unknown of secondary school. Please ensure that your children are able to talk with you about their concerns and reassure them that they are being well prepared for this next step. They will have transition opportunities where they have the chance to spend time at their new school to familiarise themselves with the environment, staff, students and routines. We will also be creating opportunities for the children in the younger grades who are continuing at St Mary’s, to experience what life will be like in their new class. Currently we are allocating teachers to classes, which will be followed by the allocation of students to classes. We dedicate a lot of time and care to ensure that every child is placed in a class with others who will support them with their learning. We thank you for your support and understanding as we follow this process to give your children the best possible opportunity to learn and grow in their new class next year.
Kind regards
Lisa
Last term we celebrated 'Footy Day'. We came dressed up in our favourite sports attire, particpated in activities run by the 5/6 students and had a sausage sizzle lunch. It was a fun day!

St Mary's Craft Group - Christmas Stall
Once again we will be having a Christmas Stall. There will be a few changes and we hope that you will understand and keep supporting our school through these stalls.
Unfortunately we are finding it increasingly difficult to produce presents for under $5 so this time we will be offering presents for up to $10. We will however continue to have items from $1 up to $10 as we understand the current economic climate. Previously each child was asked to only buy 1 item and then come back at the end if we still have presents, ensuring every child had a present to take home. At our Christmas stall the children will be able to purchase several items to the value of $5 if they wish or one item up to $10. The reason for the change is that although the children are encouraged to have a look around before they decide sometimes a gift at $1 appeals to them.
Thanks for your continued support. We welcome donations of goods for the Stall as we need lots of presents!
Moe Art Society Spring Art Show
Nine St Mary's year 5/6 students recently submitted artwork for the 2023 Moe Art Society Spring Art Show.
For the very first time, the Art Society invited local primary school students to create a canvas artwork for the show based on the theme "Something that makes you happy".
Kaitlyn, Luke, Scarlette, Bianca, Natalie, Dexter, Oscar, Tom and Hannah each designed an artwork for display in the show.
Judges award prizes for their favourite 3 artworks from each school and winners were announced at the official opening ceremony on Friday night.
Kaitlyn received a first place medallion for her artwork featuring her family. Luke placed second with his drawing of an army tank. Scarlette's landscape scene earned her a third place for St Mary's. Luke and Scarlette each received an art themed prize.
Artwork is on display at the Latrobe City Library in Moe until the 28th October.
