This term 5/6A have been focusing and preparing themselves for debating. Debating is a great way to tackle those public speaking nerves and respond in an appropriate manner by putting your point of view across. The students have chosen the topic question 'Summer is better than Winter' and are developing the skills to critically think and deliver a written and oral presentation. Here is what some of the students have to say for each team.
Affirmative team members
Amelie “Summer allows you to have greater access to swimming facilities such as beaches and outdoor pools".
Ben “Summer allows you to burn more calories due to people just getting out more and exercising”.
Noah “Vitamin D assists with absorption of iron within the body and it is better to consume with natural sun light rather than taking a tablet”.
Negative team members
Mia “Winter is defined as a cold season between autumn and spring and summer is defined as hot season between spring and autumn and we the negative team believe that winter is the season to be a part of over summer”.
Natalie “UV rays are greater in summer than in winter and because of that, the greater UV exposure increase the risk of diseases and serious health issues such as eye disease and skin cancer”.
Xavier “Colder weather doesn’t make you feel guilty of being lazy or recharging your batteries by staying indoors and watch your favourite movies and series”.
Adeleine “In summer there are less items of clothes to wear due to the hot temperatures. However, winter allows you to wear many layers and be able to accessorise".
Dear Parents
Today our school commemorated Remembrance Day with several very moving ceremonies. Our Year 6 Mini Oblates walked to the Newborough RSL and represented our school so beautifully, laying a wreath in honour of those who fought and gave their lives through war. 11 November is universally associated with the remembrance of those who died in the First World War. This conflict had mobilised over 70 million people and left between nine and 13 million dead and as many as one third of these with no grave. Our students showed leadership, respect and understanding of the importance of remembering. At school we all gathered at the new flag poles and our Year 5 students presented a beautiful ceremony, also commemorating Remembrance Day. At our whole school assembly this afternoon we will again be remembering the significance of this day. These occasions remind us of the need to reflect on the gift we have in this wonderful country of ours. While we acknowledge the sadness of the lives lost, the focus is on the blessings we have and how fortunate we are to live in our beautiful country and to be able to share in these moments together as a school community.
With the fete fast approaching, I take this opportunity to thank the amazing group of parents who have worked tirelessly to make this day happen. So much work goes on behind the scenes to ensure the day is a success. I also thank each one of you for the support you continue to give in so many ways. Whether it is buying wristbands, sending in jars of lollies, volunteering to work at the fete on the day, whatever you are able to offer, we appreciate. We went ahead with the fete this year when so many other schools have not, as we feel that it is a wonderful opportunity for our kids and families to come together as a community to celebrate who we are and what a fantastic school community we have. We are hoping and praying for sunny weather! I look forward to sharing this exciting day with you all.
Kind regards
Lisa
